Let me tell you something, college is not for everyone. College is not needed to be “Successful” and it is not needed to be happy. There are millions of ways to make a life for yourself that college can not teach you. College is meant for kids who follow guidelines and follow the typical plan of life. They go to college, get a job, find a spouse, have kids, retire… But what about people who are not like everyone else. When given a plan, they figure out ways to expedite the process, they come up with ways to better their lives and peoples lives around them. These are the people who change the world, and college cannot teach that.
So if that second person sounds like you, don’t “waste $150,000 on an education you coulda got for $1.50 in late fees at the public library”(Matt Damon, Good Will Hunting). Be creative enough to make a job for yourself rather than find a job with horrible hours and a horrible boss, just so you can buy that dream car. College does not teach that. College does not tell you what the world needs you to fix or create or explore. College takes your money and gives you the basics.
Here is the real dream right here: Start a company that has to do with what you are passionate about. Be prepared to struggle for years and years. “Work like hell. I mean you just have to put in 80 to 100 hour weeks every week. This improves the odds of success. If other people are putting in 40 hour work weeks and you’re putting in 100 hour work weeks, then even if you’re doing the same thing, you know that you will achieve in 4 months what it takes them a year to achieve”(Elon Musk). Once you have reached a place in your life where your income can support you, take off. Travel, explore, love, grow. Why work hard all the way til’ 80, when you can your tail end off until 35 and then do what you care about. That is my goal.
I am 18. I don’t want to go to college. I want to spend the summer after I graduate high school hiking, traveling, and doing what I love (I’ll probably write about it). Then take a portion of what I would have spent on college and start the company I have been working on. It will have to work my ass off, but if I work hard enough, hopefully it will all pay off. And my biggest fear is that I will rely on my parents, which is why I plan to move out west so that I can force myself to grow on my own, and earn everything I want myself.
Point is, don’t go to college if it does not fit who you are. I mean, don’t sit around and let you life go to waste. If you choose not to go to college, be prepared to work hard because nothing is going to be handed to you on a silver platter.
Peace be with you always-
